Visits with Barb

Looking for conversation and engagement

Barb’s mom lives in a care facility in Calgary Alberta. The food is good and the people are nice, there just isn’t too much to do during the day. Barb does visit her mom regularly but with work and family it is hard to get in to see her more often. Barb hired A Friend Indeed who comes in two times a week to visit her mom. She knows that her mom will be visited by a kind hearted person who will give her mom one-on-one time and who will engage her in fun activities and conversation. She knows the Friend will come prepared with ideas and suggestions and will let her mom take the lead deciding what she feels like doing first. Quieter, relaxing visits could look like reading out loud or listening to music while more active visits can look like going for strolls together or hitting a balloon around while recalling stories.

Barb likes knowing her mom is engaged and having a good time. She reads the summary that is e-mailed at the end of the visit. The summary covers the activities and fun her mom and the Friend had that day as well as any concerns or changes observed by the Friend in a regular email sent the day of each visit.

A story of a care facility in Calgary

A story of a senior living alone and with limited mobility

Visits with Mary

Living alone and limited mobility

Mary lives in her own home in Airdrie Alberta. Her husband had passed away a few years ago and her children do visit but not as often as she would like. She understands though as they work in Calgary and are raising children of their own. She feels lonely from time to time and since she doesn’t drive anymore, she finds it difficult to get out like she used to.
Mary’s children visit their mom regularly but find that she is spending a lot of her time by herself. It is hard to get out and see her more because of work and the kids are now in scheduled sport activities. They use A Friend Indeed service to help them out and give their mom that extra set of helping hands she needs. A Friend comes out to visit Mary twice a week. Tuesday afternoons are spent getting out of the house with her Friend. A change of scenery is uplifting. With her Friend, they go out for coffee and sometimes browse in a store together. It feels nice to regularly get out into the community again. The second scheduled visit of the week is Friday mornings. Mary prefers to decide how the visit will be spent that morning. Most often the two of them stay in and tackle a small job around the house. They always finish up and save time for a few laughs over a cup of tea or juice, depending on the weather. Mary looks forward to her visits she likes how they break up her week.

Mary’s daughter remains in the loop and appreciates the short concise email summaries from A Friend Indeed after each visit. This reassurance that her mom is still keeping active and has the assistance available is peace of mind for her.

Visits with Gerri

Looking for help with groceries

Gerri lives in her own home in Airdrie Alberta and is pretty self sufficient if she says so herself. Recently she has lost her driver’s license and it has been a big adjustment for her, particularly when it comes to getting groceries. She had taken a cab before but she still struggled with managing the bags and the conversations never really went anywhere. She thought it would be helpful to have someone available inside the store to help her read the fine print and reach the items on the higher shelves. Her only son lives out of town –far enough that it would be an unreasonable request to ask for his assistance especially because of the frequent perishables she needs.

Her son called A Friend Indeed to help his mom out with grocery shopping trips on a regular schedule. Every week her Friend shows up on time at Gerri’s home to take her grocery shopping.

After checking out, the bags are carefully loaded into the vehicle and carried in the house when they return home. Gerri especially enjoys sharing the dreadful task of putting away the groceries with her Friend as their conversations usually get quite comical. Their weekly ritual to wind down from shopping involves a cup of tea and a friendly chat.

Gerri’s son is very happy and content to know that his mom is being helped out in such a way that would mirror just how he would have helped himself if he lived closer. With regular email updates he is confident and informed about his mom’s well-being.
